Dealing with Grief

As a parent of a child with autism and as a teacher I have a difficulty when others report that students with ASD lack empathy. I try to correct this faulty judgment when I have the opportunity to do so, by explaining that there really is not lack of empathy, nor any absence of the ability to feel this. There may however be a different way of processing or expressing the feeling, and also a challenge with understanding the perspective and therefore the experience of others. This is fundamentally different than the judgment that an individual lacks the capacity for empathy.

Information Re: Reading Comprehension Software for High Functioning 15-Year Old Boy

I have a 15-year old son with high-functioning autism, somewhat hyperlexic. I am looking for software that would help to address his gaps in comprehension, inferencing, subtext, etc.  He currently enjoys reading things at the  'magic treehouse' level.  I have some autism funding available so any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Interesting Quotation

This is an interesting quote (author unknown) referred to by Dr. Cathy Watkins:

"Our job is to teach the kids we have, not the kids we used to have, not the kids we wish we had, not the kids who exist only in our dreams."

Cadet Program

Hi - I am a sea cadet officer/instructor who is responsible for new entry cadets (age 12). We have a male cadet who has just joined who has autism and I am looking for any advice as to teaching aids and/or methodologies to help assist in his training.  As cadets is intended to be an 'everyone is the same' environment I have been having difficulties in addressng his unique needs without singling him out from the rest of the new entry cadets which based upon research I understand would prove to be more detrimental than beneficial.
