has developed supports and strategies that are helping our Grade 5 student on the autism spectrum achieve success. They are helping to meet his needs in the following domains: social interaction, communication, behaviours and emotional functioning, self determination and independence, cognition, and academics. With these supports and strategies in place the student is able to function in the classroom with part time support.
The student:
- uses a schedule attached to his desk to follow classroom and individual day routines.
- uses a self-monitoring checklist for bathroom breaks and sensory breaks, which the team uses to assess his independence of self regulation.
- has access to a quiet room in which he can have a timed sensory break or
de-escalation time if needed.
- uses assignment checklists for steps in completing and handing in assignments.
- has cue cards on ring (for desk and at home) and file notes on his desktop of various procedures he needs to follow in using his laptop and computer at home.
- has a visual cue card on his desk and in the library for whole body listening.
- uses a 5-point scale for anxiety with calm down strategies on a visual card.
- completes a daily self-assessment form of math group behaviour for organization, participation, focus and time.
- uses classroom rubrics for self and peer assessments.
- has a classroom/school job he completes every morning to start the routine of his school day.
- follows various routines for completing classroom activities (i.e., planner).
- participates in goal setting with the class. The student picks a goal he needs to work on and sets up the strategies he will use to meet his goal. Visual supports are provided as needed. He is able to determine if he has achieved the goal.
- uses Kurzweil to support his reading and writing.
- participates in a social cognition program involving the programs Superflex and Being a Social Detective.
- reads social stories to help him understand social situations.
- participates in a play group with classmates at lunch time once a week to develop social and communication skills.
