Early life events and environmental factors may interact significantly with genetic susceptibility in a child. Environmental stimuli may be disturbing or even painful to someone with autism. This may apply to any or all types of sensory input. Personal accounts of autism have emphasized this. The other characteristics associated with autism may be caused, in part, by a disorder in sensory processing. The extent to which sensory problems may contribute to other characteristics associated with autism is not certain. However, there is sufficient information to suggest that consideration be given to both the type and amount of sensory stimulation in the environment, and an individual's reaction to it.
