Introduction to Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

The Introduction to Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) course is offered to teachers, paraprofessionals, and other educational staff.  The course consists of 25 hours of instruction, held in our training centre in Delta over a 4-day period, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm daily.  Completion of this course provides the participant an overview of ABA history and theory, but the emphasis will be on practical hands-on coaching and training.  Participants will have the opportunity to develop a comfort level with teaching in a Discrete Trial Format by having daily opportunities to practice the necessary skills.   They will also see how ABA principles are applied to other teaching situations and to program development for students with autism spectrum disorders.  ABA Course Prerequisite:  POPARD’s Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders – Practical Applications or University Level Overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

 

Goals of this Course:

 

  • To learn common vocabulary of Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • To learn how to implement basic ABA strategies and techniques
  • To learn how to collect reliable and consistent data when working with students 

 

When the Candidate completes the ABA course, they will be able to:

 

  • Demonstrate understanding of the ABC’s of behaviour
  • Demonstrate reinforcement strategies for students and be able to create motivating conditions for student learning
  • Demonstrate Discrete Trial Format with a variety of curriculum
  • Demonstrate a variety of techniques within Discrete Trial Training
  • Deal with student errors within DTF instruction
  • Record the level of prompting for instruction on a data sheet
  • Define SD, R (SR), C, and Prompts
  • Shape a behaviour or skill
  • Demonstrate chaining strategies and prompting levels for a task analysis that the student creates
  • Complete a task analysis and design a data collection sheet for the task analysis
  • Identify incidental and naturalistic opportunities for instruction for students
  • Define Pivotal Response Interventions and identify pivotal skills for instruction
  • Select appropriate ABA strategies and techniques for teaching a variety of curriculum

Note:  This course will not qualify participants as a behavioural analyst, nor to act as a consultant.  It will provide participants with the knowledge necessary to carry out behavioural programs with children under the direction of a consultant with extensive experience in autism and relevant educational qualifications.  If you are looking for qualification in assessment and program design, then a rigorous program of training, supervision, and evaluation over time is required.

 

Criteria for Training:

This training program is offered to school district personnel throughout the Province of British Columbia. 

Course Fees:

Employees of BC School Districts, or independent schools following the BC Ministry of Education curriculum, receive course tuition at no charge. 

To obtain this service, the District Partner, District Administrator of Special Services, or School Principal must provide approval by signing a Tuition Waiver Form

Tuition fees for all other persons are in the amount of $300.00. 

All Trainees are charged a non-refundable course fee of $45.00.
